DAILYGUT CHRISTMAS FACTSOUP!

-Using stockings on Christmas Eve is a tradition begun in Germany. The stockings would be filled not with candy, however, but other, smaller stockings. Within those stockings? Loose clumps of red pubic hair, affectionately called Santa`s whiskers.

-Department stores were built to deal specifically with Christmas shoppers who needed a place to have their gifts wrapped. It was only after the success of the gift wrapping enterprise that these stores began selling merchandise on the premises. Prior to merchandise, the poor were often distributed to the rich as gifts. Unfortunately, nearly all would die slow, suffocating deaths in their neatly wrapped boxes.

-In France, Santa Claus actually means "Pierre the fat man who beats my mother."

-According to folklore, if you are born on Christmas day, you would inevitably drown before you were 12, usually in a bathtub. This belief was so widespread that parents routinely drowned their children at age 11 to avoid the impending heartache.

-Jingle Bells was originally the soundtrack for a short film called One Horse Open Sleigh. Back then, "open sleigh" meant "on it`s back."

-In the 1700's, Christmas carols were sung specifically to orphans before they were made into holiday sausage. Few complained because the sausage was so good.

-According to historical record, if you were to walk under mistletoe, you had to strip to your underpants. If you weren`t wearing underpants, then you were whipped. This practice led to the widespread use of underpants.

-Wreaths were originally placed on doors as doorbells. Later, these wreaths were replaced with real doorbells. Hence, why we have doorbells.

-Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer`s red nose was caused by syphilis, given to him by Gene Autry, who later sang about the affliction, creating one of the most successful Christmas songs of all time. The money Autry made from the song was spent on lawyers hired to bury his hideous sexual transgressions with reindeer, as well caribou and yak.

-The most profitable Christmas movie ever made is the Exorcist

-Christmas cards are traditionally placed in red envelopes to symbolize the blood of postmen who die under the strain of oversized mail sacks. (You can visit the "Unknown Postman" sculpture at the Museum fur Hanburische Geschichte).

-And finally, contrary to popular belief, christmas lights aren't just for the home. You can also hang them on the homeless.
