THE REAL SERIAL KILLERS? YOU AND ME!
In 2004 Dr Stott and scientists at Oxford University showed that human emissions of greenhouse gases had more than doubled the risk of record-breaking heatwaves such as the one reckoned to have killed 27,000 people across Europe in 2003. The Met Office figures show that 2006 is set to be 1.37C warmer than the mean temperature logged over the four decades from 1961. The previous two hottest years, 1990 and 1999, both recorded mean temperatures of 10.63C.

It's true. If we are partially responsible for rising greenhouse gases that indirectly increased the temperature slightly - causing a heat wave that slaughtered thousands - then we are all serial killers responsible for incinerating piles of innocent Europeans.

Never mind the fact that those dead folks were mainly the poor, elderly French who didn't have air conditioning, and croaked while their doctors were off on three month holiday.

And never mind that any moron (i.e. me) can tell you that mild winters save far more lives than might be claimed by a heat wave. In the UK alone, it's estimated that 20 thousand lives are saved for every mild winter - a number that goes up ten times if you factor in all of europe. But that fact doesn't fit into the lazy story telling that is climate change journalism - which is why you'll never read it in the Guardian. Or in any paper, for that matter.

This particular piece, instead of focusing on fact, builds a story - one that is easily understood by the arrogant, simplistic mindset that prefers to think humans (or rather, capitalistic humans) are to blame for everything wrong in the world. It's not only dishonest, it's murderous. We are now scaring a populace into thinking that the biggest threat to mankind is man's role in climate change, instead of ideologies that promote death and violence.

But it's not until you get to the final paragraphs that you find this great nugget:

"Though scientists are not able to pin a single year's record temperatures on global warming, the long-term trend towards a warming climate is now irrefutable, they claim, and should be taken seriously by policy makers."

Only the Guardian could print that without questioning whether it makes any sense.

Finally, the other thing I don't get about climate change claptrap is...what if it's true? So what? Here's what:
  • We'll have warmer nights, which is great if you have problems sleeping. I've found that when i cannot sleep, simply opening a window to allow a warm nighttime breeze knocks me out immediately. Of course, I have also been robbed 38 times - usually by the same person (my neighbor Rick)
  • Most of the earth's lush vegetation arose due to warmer temperatures, so global warming might save more people than it kills. Of course, no lefty environmentalist would agree with this, because it would turn his whole life upside down and all the stupidity would pour out his nose. And then, of course, he would float away up into the atmosphere, toward the sun and die a fiery death. This would raise temperatures even more, and the deadly cycle would continue (hopefully).
