A DOUBLE BONUS WEEKEND FOR LIBERALS!
Pinochet, perhaps more than any other US-supported dictator, put into practice Kirkpatrick's social theories and Friedman's "free market" economics. In the name of "anti-Communism," Pinochet liquidated the Parliament, censored the press, jailed and tortured his opponents, made mass arrests without due process, terrorized his own population, and then privatized nearly all of Chile's public institutions. He gave back the copper mines and operations to Anaconda and Kennecott Copper, and the phone lines back to ITT. He presided over a 17-year dictatorship responsible for the murder or "disappearance" of tens of thousands of innocent Chileans. (He launched "Operation Condor," which was responsible for assassinating his political opponents all over Latin America and the world, including the car bombing of Orlando Letelier and the 25-year-old journalist, Ronnie Moffet, in Washington, DC in September 1976.)

[Joseph A. Palermo]
huffington post digg this
Y'know, I had this great idea to write a little tongue-in-cheek item about how it must've been a tough weekend for your garden variety New York Timesian liberal, having to decide whether you were happier about Pinochet's death or Kirkpatrick's. I guess I should've known the ol' reliable wackjobs at HuffPo would beat me to it, and even throw in Milton Friedman as a bonus! The unfunny part about this is that Joe Palermo, a guy who believes that when Pinochet "liquidated the Parliament, censored the press, jail and tortured his opponents, made mass arrests without due process [and] terrorized his own population" he was putting Kirkpatrick's "social theories" into practice, is a history professor with two masters degrees and a doctorate.

Unfunny, but unfortunately not unbelievable. Maybe this is what Gwynnie was talking about!

By the way, I think there's some kind of tech problem at HuffPo - I can't seem to find any of Palermo's anti-Saddam columns. Can anyone help me out?
