THE UNITED STATES OF THE AGGRIEVED

By dustrider
After listening to this morning's show, I've decided if Homeless Charlie had sounded like Ozzie last week, none of this would have happened because no one would have understood Breitbart's audio.

(O&A are still walking on eggshells, because they know dozens of special interest groups are taping the broadcasts. The trick will be to make the forced-mundane parts funny because of their blandnes...

Given my politically incorrect and quasi insane sense of humor, under these current oppressive conditions to expression, I have no doubt I`d be fired by my employer and permanently banned from the airwaves by the FCC within two (2) days of starting a radio job in ANY SIZE market.
By conehead
So what's the chance that Rosie, while channelling Moby Dickless, was actually fired from the View because she offended intelligent conservative people?
By Mike B.
Isn't it true that the only person that matters here is the employer? People and groups of people have complained about offensive speech since forever, and unless you outlaw the free speech of the complainers in order to provide speakers with a complaint-free audience, which contradicts itself, they will do so in the future.
By Mike B.
But just because someone complains doesn't mean their complaint has merit, nor does it mean that it can never have merit just because you might be judged yourself in the future. If you are O&A's boss, then you have to either fire them or stand-up for them, but the choice is yours.

I don't know what makes anyone think that organizations like Media Matters and Breitbart.tv aren't just as dangerous as the government. If they are given the power to control speech, they become even more dangerous than the government because they aren't elected.
By Mike B.
What exactly could Media Matters and Breitbart do if XM told them to fuck off? Complain more? Tell people who don't already like and don't listen to O&A not to listen more? Comparing them to the government is ridiculous.
By Shannan
Mike - Money matters. Whether you are on the public airwaves or on pay satellite... if advertisers pull out or subscribers do not renew, you are gone.

Zelda -the government, per se, is not dangerous. Uncontrolled, blind acceptance of government power is.
By Mike B.
Shannan: Yes, that is my point. People who state (correctly) that XM is a private, paid-for service and that you don't have to listen to it if you don't want to, either implicitly or explicitly say that if you don't like it, then don't subscribe. How else should it be? Likewise, if you don't like people complaining about these shows, then don't listen.
By Shannan
Mike - I am dense. I also state the obvious :)

I do wonder what the bounds will be stretched to. My grannie was out here visiting last summer and nearly had a heart attack when she saw two men kissing on TV. I try to think what would give me a heart attack. Normal might be sex with an animal, but I saw that in Tijuana in the 80's so... I guess I will know it when I see it (as they say). ...

Has anyone outside of New York ever even heard of these guys? Evidently they weren't pulling big numbers, because if they were they wouldn't be out of work. Shows like Stern and Rush are insulated from this type of intimidation by the fact that they're hugely profitable for syndicators and stations. Sounds like these guys are just hacks -- maybe they were fired for just not being all that good,...
By cutter
And that incompetence just happened to stray into racial insensitivity, which opened the door through which they were kicked out onto their asses. I mean, "slimp flied lice" -- ? Wizzle-wuzzle? This is what passes for comedy these days?
By Shannan
OF COURSE they are hacks! Who else would pull that crap? They are trying to get notice (mission accomlished) so they can feed out of the same trough as Stern... the 10 to 26 year olds. Women (and girls for that matter) would never abide that rubbish. Sorry men, it's true.

it's nowhere near the level of that classic: "YOU GO NOW!"

...still funny, every time...
By dustrider
With XM, it's not as much about the advertisers right now as it is the subs, and judging by XM's reaction to Al Sharpton's request for a meeting -- which was basically to tell Al to go Tawanna himself -- the company figures the subs it would lose by cancelling O&A would be worse than bowing to the special interest groups and regaining a couple of advertisers.

that reminds me - I'm running low on vegetables

Shannan - Government seeks power. That's why it is inherently dangerous. But democracy keeps it in check. What worries me far more than the government are unelected, undemocratic organizations like Media Matters (and the media in general) having the power to influence who is allowed to say what. That is a frightening amount of authority for unaccountable entities.
By Texas Bob
Democracy? What country do you live in? America is a Republic, which unlike a democracy, is supposed to protect its citizens from the tyranny of the majority....

Eh, maybe it is a democracy after all.
By mojo__
Well, I personally am in favor of taking all the "Morning Zoo", "Dog House" (etc., ad nauseum) morning jocks and feeding them into a shredder.

But that's probably because I haven't had my coffee yet.
By ZeldaC
Point taken, Texas Bob. How about: The threat of elections keeps government in check.
By Shannan
Zelda, Government's UNCHECKED power grab is the danger. Like when they try to legislate how you live, protect you from your own stupidity, collect taxes in order to create self important programs aimed to control those over who fall under their governance. The more you rely on them, the more control they have.
By Shannan
As for the unelected folks like Media Matters or Breitbart (although I question Breitbart being on that list) there are others with the opposite view out there. Who broke the cum stain on Monica's dress? It is all good... unless they lie and idiots believe it. But there is a remedy for that.
By Lori_Z
To me, it is in a way more distressing the we seem to be giving up our liberties on our own. Out of some twisted sense of fairness (if he/she got fired then so should he) or some self-righteous sense of moral superiority.

By DarkUrthe
Like the old snarky snippet from the 80's: the moral majority is neither.

By Jim Treacher
"Well, I personally am in favor of taking all the 'Morning Zoo', 'Dog House' (etc., ad nauseum) morning jocks and feeding them into a shredder."

So would O&A. That's not the kind of show they do.
By ZeldaC
Shannen - Government, by it's nature, seeks to amass as much unchecked power as possible. We, the people, are the check on governmental power.

I see entities like Media Matters as an uncheckable form of government, since they attempt to restrict our freedoms and dictate rules without having to be accountable to an electorate. This is far more dangerous than our current system of government.
By Shannan
Zelda - I am with you on part I.

You know what really bigs me about the people in part II of your message? It is when you disagree with those freaks they shoult you down and tell you to shut up. Who are the ones that shout down speakers, call you a nazi or want you arrested if you say global warming MAY not be man made? They want free speech only for them.
By ZeldaC
I think you are with me on Part II then too. You have to look out for anyone who wants to shut down free speech while still defending their rights to free speech. It's a difficult path, to be sure.
By Shannan
Kum Ba Yah.

Try living in Washington state. If you are not wearing black and demanding the end of our soldiers committing atrocities against the Iraqis you had better be wearing a helmet because stones are being hurled your way. Dissent is forbidden.
By ZeldaC
Yeah, I got pushed into traffic by those freedom loving morons. But what do they have to do with O & A?
By Shannan
Those morons are the same sort of folks that have decided what Opie and Andy can and cannot say. Any defense of O & A is forbidden and you will be marked as a raist (or whatever "ist").

Also, I just now took a good look at the pic associated with this vent... how does that guy fit that giant, grey tongue in his mouth? To me that is more of a concern at this point.
By ZeldaC
So were we arguing?

And the tongue is disturbing. Looks like something you'd find on Rosie O'Donnell.
By Jim Treacher
On, or in.
By ZeldaC
Mercy, Jim. He really needs to wrap that critter up.
